Does Your Baby Have Colic?

When adults and older children have a headache, neck or back pain, they can vocalize their problem and ask for help. Unfortunately, when a baby is in any kind of pain, they can only alert you to their distress by crying. Crying is natural, but most parents instinctively know if their baby is crying more than they should be. We hope this article helps to provide you with the Colic information you need to ensure a happy childhood.

What Causes Colic?

At one time infantile colic was thought to be a result of the child having indigestion. Today, infantile colic is described as “inexpiable and uncontrollable crying in babies from 0 to 3 months old, occurring more than 3 hours a day, 3 days a week for 3 weeks or more, generally occurring in the late afternoon or evening.” While indigestion could certainly cause crying, it's not the only potential culprit.

When a doctor is performing a cesarean delivery, it is estimated that the baby is removed with between 50-88 pounds of force. There are also chances that clamps or a vacuum might be used to assist in delivery. This combination could potentially have a negative effect on the spine, as demonstrated by a study published in the German medical journal “Manual Medicine.” Two doctors monitored a group of 1258 babies, of whom 211 were found to suffer from vomiting, hyperactivity, or sleeplessness. Manual examination of the babies revealed that 95% of the group suffered from some form of spinal abnormality.

If a child has a subluxation then there is a great chance that it is interfering with your child’s natural function, and causing discomfort or even pain. Our team can perform a minor chiropractic adjustment to clear up a subluxation and help the body heal, restoring proper nervous system function.

As a result, not only will your child(ren) possibly breastfeed better, they may cry less because they are more comfortable. They are also potentially at a decreased risk for allergies, ADD/ADHD, colds, flus, ear infections, asthma and delayed development if their nervous system is functioning fully. Proper chiropractic care can make a world of difference in your child's life and, by extension, yours.
